Donna J. Zirbel, age 71, of Ames, Iowa, died Saturday, February 2, 2019, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames surrounded by Mitch, Tom, and many other members of her loving family. Former husband Mark Zirbel was also by her side.

Born February 5, 1947, in Carrington, North Dakota, Donna Jean Zirbel was the daughter of William Richard and Anne (O'Neill) Monk. She graduated from Fessenden High School and attended NDSU. Donna was employed in food service in various capacities throughout her working years. Most recently, she worked in the Ames Community School District for many years where she formed lasting friendships with her co-workers.

Donna was a dedicated mother who always put the wants and needs of her kids above her own. She was passionate about both listening to Mitch’s music and attending Tom’s bike races. Donna loved spending time with her grandson Taavi who brightened her days. Thanks to FaceTime and videos, she was able to keep up with family between visits. She also enjoyed reading, studying scripture, reading, visiting with co-workers, reading, crocheting, reading and watching movies. Needless to say, her home was filled with books and a book was never far from her hand.

Donna was a kind and generous person who will be greatly missed by her whole family and friends. She is survived by her two sons, Mitch Zirbel of Mason City, and Tom (Rebecca) Zirbel of Boulder, CO; one grandchild, Taavi Zirbel; three brothers, Curtis (Susan) Monk of Hudson, CO, Gary (Alison) Monk of Harmony, PA, and Morey (fiance Dawn Boerner) Monk of Winner, SD; seven sisters, Wynne (John) Stranberg of Sheboygan Falls, WI, Barb (Doyle) Kauffman of Chariton, Karen (Bryan) Morlock of Fergus Falls, MN, Cindy (Steven) Ward of Cody, WY, Mitzi (George "Bud") Lawrence of Costa Mesa, CA, Marcy (Kevin) Klejeski of Bemidji, MN, and Lori Stern of Boone; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members and close friends in the Zirbel clan.

“The last time I saw Donna was the week of her High School Graduation. She was such a bright spark; open, tender and full of energy. A lot of time has passed but that brightness obviously went on.
My thoughts and prayers go out to her family in this sad time.

“I worked with Donna for years through Ames Schools and I am so sorry to hear of her passing. She was a very sweet lady and she will be missed. Even thought we hadn’t worked in the same building together for quite some time, she always made a point to say Hi and ask how I was doing whenever we saw one another. We would talk about old times of when I was a young “kid” as she called me when I first started and how she laugh at me learning how to cook. She will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you. ”
